Seventeen golfers have won the Masters multiple times. Will Scottie Scheffler become the 18th? The world number one is 18 holes away from earning his second green jacket, as he heads into today’s final round with a one-shot lead.
As was the case on Friday, low scores were not plentiful in the third round. Of the 60 golfers to make the weekend cut, a dozen posted under-par scores yesterday.
Scheffler was one of that dozen, as he overcame three bogeys and a double bogey to shoot a one-under 71.
After entering the third round tied for the lead with Bryson DeChambeau and Max Homa, the 2022 Masters champion sits at -7, one shot ahead of Collin Morikawa and two shots ahead of Homa. Rounding out the top five are Ludvig Aberg (-4) and DeChambeau (-3).
The lowest score of the day belonged to Chris Kirk, who shot a four-under 68 to jump nearly 30 spots and move into a tie for 16th.
But the best round of the day by a contender was by Morikawa, whose 69 was his third straight under-par score following scores of 71 and 70 on Thursday and Friday.
Will today become the latest memorable Sunday at Augusta National? With the form that Scheffler is in, he will be hard to overhaul even with a small lead, but it is anything but a given with Morikawa, Homa, and Aberg all within a few swings one way or the other from the tide turning in their favor.

2024 Masters Final Round Predictions and Picks
Both of yesterday’s picks hit, as Scheffler finished the round as the leader and Morikawa had a better round than Homa, who shot a one-over 73.
Head-to-head matchup odds for the final round feature another Morikawa-Homa matchup, and I’m compelled to go back to the well and take Morikawa (-120) over Homa (+100) again.
Morikawa may not have the Masters lead, but he is the only golfer in the field with three consecutive under-par rounds and one of five to shoot par or better in each round.
There are a couple of finishing position picks that I really like as well. Schauffele is one of the other golfers to finish par or better in each round, and I think he will land in the top five (he is +135 to do so) when the dust settles.
Also, I think Patrick Cantlay will move into the top ten, which he is +150 to do. A three-over 75 on Friday means he’s likely too far behind to contend for the win unless things get wild, but he bounced back well with a two-under 70 yesterday.
Additionally, I’d suggest a little sprinkle on Cameron Smith to finish in the top five (+350). Smith has three top-five finishes in seven Masters appearances, and like Morikawa and Schauffele (and Fleetwood and Scheffler), he has finished par or better in each round. Also, he is +100 to shoot 71 or better, which I also like.
But who will receive the green jacket from 2023 Masters winner Jon Rahm this evening? Scheffler had quite the eventful round yesterday but managed to somehow end up under par. Am I betting against him after that? Absolutely not.
