British Open 2023 Tournament Betting Odds & Favorites

On Thursday, the likes of Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, and Jon Rahm will tee it up at the final major of the PGA Tour season, as the 2023 British Open (a.k.a. The Open Championship) will commence at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Wirral, England.

This will be the 13^th time that the Open will be held at Royal Liverpool. Most recently, it was held there in 2014.

That year, Rory McIlroy claimed the third of his four career major titles, leading the tournament wire-to-wire and finishing two strokes ahead of Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia.

Weeks later, McIlroy won the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky. To date, that is his most recent major title.

Will his drought end this week at a course where he experienced one of his career highlights? After a win at the Scottish Open last week, the latest Open Championship odds have the former world number one as the favorite.

British Open 2023 Tournament Favorites

Rory McIlroy

Will this be McIlroy’s best chance to finally win an elusive fifth major title?

Since his PGA Championship win almost nine years ago, McIlroy has 15 PGA Tour wins and has finished in the top ten in 19 of his 34 major appearances, including six times in seven majors in 2022 and 2023.

Ten of those finishes are top-five finishes, including a runner-up finish behind Wyndham Clark at the U.S. Open last month.

Will this be his week?

He certainly couldn’t ask for better British Open prep, as he won last week’s Scottish Open by a stroke over Robert MacIntyre.

McIlroy has been on a solid run as of late, finishing in the top ten in six straight tournaments since finishing 47^th at the PGA Championship in May.

If it doesn’t happen for him this week, when will it?

Scottie Scheffler

Like McIlroy, Scheffler has been a frequent face in the top ten of major leaderboards recently.

In his last ten major appearances, Scheffler has finished in the top ten eight times, including all three majors this year.

Scheffler has also been on a heck of a run on the PGA Tour this season. Four bogeys on Sunday hurt his chances to seriously challenge McIlroy in the final round at the Scottish Open, but he finished tied for third, his seventh straight top-five finish.

Since finishing tied for 45^th to open his season, Scheffler has not finished outside of the top 12.

But wins continue to be just beyond him, as he still has just the two victories he picked up before spring at the WM Phoenix Open and the Players Championship.

Still, with how consistently he has finished near the top of the leaderboard this year, his position as one of the leading British Open favorites is warranted.

Jon Rahm

Unlike McIlroy and Scheffler, Rahm did not play in the Scottish Open.

Could that prep have been beneficial for him? He hasn’t played since last month’s Travelers Championship, where he missed the cut.

In six British Open appearances, Rahm has finished in the top ten only twice, while he has at least three top-ten finishes in the other three majors.

But with four wins this season, including a win at the Masters in April, Rahm is not going to not be among the favorites to win at Royal Liverpool.

Cameron Smith

Smith took the win at the 150^th Open Championship last year at St. Andrews, edging out Cameron Young by a stroke with a total of 20-under par.

Since then, Smith has left the PGA Tour for LIV Golf. That doesn’t mean as much as it did pre-merger, but it does make it a little more difficult to weigh his 2023 versus what McIlroy, Scheffler, and Rahm have done.

However, Smith did finish tied for ninth at the PGA Championship and fourth at the U.S. Open, and he won the individual title at the most recent LIV Golf event in London earlier this month.

Where there is a mark against Smith is the fact that there hasn’t been a repeat British Open winner since Padraig Harrington in 2007 and 2008, and Harrington and Tiger Woods (2005 and 2006) are the only repeat winners of the tournament over the last four decades.
