As anticipation grows for the 2023 Open Championship, a good chunk of golf enthusiasts are also looking forward to the other PGA tournament this week: the Barracuda Championship.
The annual event takes place on the Old Greenwood Course at the Tahoe Mountain Club in Truckee, California.
For those unfamiliar with the annual event, scoring is a bit different at the Barracuda Championship. After all, it’s the only PGA event that uses Modified Stableford scoring, which promotes a more aggressive way of playing. Unlike classic scoring, the objective here is to have the highest score in the end. Here’s what the strokes-points system looks like:
- Double Eagle — 8 points
- Eagle — 5 points
- Birdie — 2 points
- Par — 0 points
- Bogey — -1 point
- Double Bogey or more — -3 points
With so much to take in ahead of the four-day event, your friends at Betting News have all of your 2023 Barracuda Championship needs covered. From the latest odds to the best bets to make this weekend and everything in between, continue reading to get your fill.

2023 Barracuda Championship Best Bets
Vincent Norrman to Win Outright (+2500)
Sometimes it’s best to go with the golfer who has the most momentum. In this case, that would be none other than Sweden’s Vincent Norrman.
Norrman has a pep in his step after winning last week’s Barbasol Championship. The victory didn’t come easy, though. The 25-year-old had to go head-to-head with Nathan Kimsey in a playoff at the Keene Trace Golf Club, eventually winning with a final score of 22-under-par.
Norrman keeps getting better as the 2023 PGA TOUR goes on. After missing the cut throughout the first half of the season, he’s finished T24 or better in six of his last 11 events. That stretch includes two more top-10 finishes on top of last week’s victory, which was also the first of his career.
This week marks Norrman’s first-ever Barracuda Championship appearance. Although it remains to be seen how he’ll handle the different scoring format, his recent play has left me confident enough to believe that he can win it all in Truckee.
Taylor Pendrith to Finish Top 10 (+250)
After looking around at some other options, I like the value (+250) that comes with a Taylor Pendrith top-10 finish at the 2023 Barracuda Championship.
Pendrith’s season has been spotty, but he’s racked up a fair share of notable performances. On top of a 70.8% success rate when it comes to making the cut, he’s also finished T15 or better five times — including a pair of top-10 performances.
You also don’t have to go too far back for Pendrith’s most recent top-10 showing. Although he was unsuccessful last week, the 32-year-old Canadian still finished sixth at Barbasol, finishing with a score of 69 or better in all four rounds. That performance is encouraging due to the fact that he placed T14 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic just two weeks before that.
Unlike Norrman, Pendrith actually has competed at the Tahoe Mountain Club before. He’s entered the Barracuda Championship twice, placing T13 in 2021 before improving to T11 just one year later. Although that isn’t quite a top-10 showing, it’s still close enough that I’m confident with this bet.
Troy Merritt to Finish Top 20 (+425)
One interesting pick that I like is Troy Merritt cracking the top 20 at +425 odds. The odds might make it seem like this bet is somewhat of a long shot, but that isn’t exactly the case.
Merritt is no stranger to the Barracuda Championship. He’s entered the tournament five times over the years, first debuting in 2011. His first two entries didn’t go as planned, missing the cut both times. Having said that, Merritt’s luck changed with back-to-back runner-up finishes in 2019 and 2020, highlighting his ability to excel at the Old Greenwood Course.
While he finished T51 in his most recent entry (2021), there’s always the possibility that could’ve been an anomaly.
As far as the 2023 golf season goes, Merritt has experienced his fair share of highs and lows. On one hand, he’s missed the cut 17 times in 25 events. On the other, he’s tallied four top-25 finishes with his best performance coming when he placed T3 at the World Wide Technology Championship.
Still, Merritt has two T17 finishes in his last three events this year. With a weaker field in Truckee this week, I like his odds of having another top-20 performance.
