The most notable day on the motorsports calendar is days away, as the 2023 editions of the Monaco Grand Prix, Indianapolis 500, and Coca-Cola 600 will take place on Sunday, May 28.
On the Formula One front, Sunday’s race at the Circuit de Monaco is the sixth race of this year’s Formula One World Championship and the first of back-to-back races, with the Spanish Grand Prix up next.
When the competition was last in action, Max Verstappen took the win at the Miami Grand Prix three weeks ago, with Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez finishing second and Fernando Alonso rounding out the podium.
It was the fourth one-two finish this season for Red Bull, with the lone exception being the Australian Grand Prix, where Verstappen took the win and Lewis Hamilton finished second.
With five races in the books, here’s how the World Drivers’ and World Constructors’ standings currently shake out.
2023 Formula One World Drivers’ Championship Standings (Through Five Races)
- Max Verstappen (Red Bull) – 119 points
- Sergio Perez (Red Bull) – 105
- Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) – 75
- Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) – 56
- Carlos Sainz Jr. (Ferrari) – 44
- George Russell (Mercedes) – 40
- Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) – 34
- Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) – 27
2023 Formula One World Constructors’ Championship Standings
- Red Bull – 224 points
- Aston Martin – 102
- Mercedes – 96
- Ferrari – 78
Unsurprisingly, the Red Bull duo of Verstappen and Perez sit atop the race winner odds for Monaco, with Leclerc having the third-best odds for his home race.
Odds to Win the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix
- Max Verstappen -120
- Sergio Perez +270
- Charles Leclerc +550
- Fernando Alonso +600
- Carlos Sainz Jr. +2300
- Lewis Hamilton +2800
- George Russell +2800
- Lance Stroll +7000
- 12 drivers +20000
In addition to claiming all five race wins and finishing one-two four times this season, Verstappen and Perez have been on pole for all but the Azerbaijan Grand Prix (Leclerc).
So, the easy thing to do is to back Verstappen or Perez for the Monaco Grand Prix win.
But will things end up being that straightforward?
In the past two years, Leclerc took the pole, only to be met with misfortune.
In 2021, Leclerc crashed in qualifying after posting the fastest time, and a cracked left driveshaft hub prevented him from even starting the race. Last year, he finished fourth after seeing his chances for a win affected by poor communication and a strategic foul-up by his team.
Is this the time to bet on Leclerc? He has more retirements (two) than podium finishes (one) in the first five races.
If I’m going to look outside of Verstappen or Perez, the best option is not the snakebitten Leclerc. Instead, it is Alonso, who has finished third in four races, with the lone non-podium a fourth-place finish in Azerbaijan.
Alonso is a two-time Monaco Grand Prix winner (2006 and 2007), and after managing just three podium finishes in seven seasons between 2014 and 2022, the two-time World Champion is once again in a car that can potentially compete for race wins.
He hasn’t been able to get over that hump yet this year, but is it only a matter of time before he does?
Think a race win will elude Alonso or want additional lower risk action on top of taking him to win? He is great value for a podium finish.
2023 Monaco Grand Prix Podium Finish Odds
- Max Verstappen -300
- Sergio Perez -200
- Charles Leclerc -195
- Fernando Alonso -105
- Carlos Sainz Jr. +330
- George Russell +350
- Lewis Hamilton +350
- Lance Stroll +650
If you are looking to tie your Monaco Grand Prix betting picks to the World Drivers’ Championship standings, it is worth noting that only two out of the last ten winners of the race have gone on to win the championship.
