Josh Taylor vs Teofimo Lopez Jr Boxing History
Although the odds vary from sportsbook to sportsbook, all four highlighted sources are in agreement that Taylor is the clear-cut favorite ahead of this weekend. The British boxer is available at an average of -215 odds across the above sportsbook, which translates to an implied win probability of 68.3%.
Taylor has made a name for himself by taking down each opponent in his way, leading to a 19-0 record ahead of his upcoming fight. Thirteen of those victories came by KO/TKO with his most recent being a first-round knockout win over Apinun Khongsong back in September 2020.
The 32-year-old has finished off many opponents lately, though. His win against Khongsong was his only knockout victory over his last five fights, most recently defeating Jack Catterall via split decision 16 months ago in what was a fight that many boxing enthusiasts thought Taylor should’ve lost.
Meanwhile, Lopez hopes to play spoiler at Madison Square Garden in just over 24 hours. His resume is somewhat similar to that of Taylor, notching 13 knockout victories over 19 fights while racking up a solid collection of gold along the way.
After suffering his first-ever loss to George Kambosos Jr. at the tail end of 2021, Lopez has gotten back on track with back-to-back wins.
He knocked out Pedro Campa after seven rounds to win the WBC-NABF and WBO International light welterweight titles before going on to tally a split-decision win over Sandor Martin four months later winning the WBO International light welterweight championship in the process.
Having said that, Lopez openly questioned himself about whether he still has ‘it’ after his latest fight. That’s not exactly the kind of mindset that’ll help him hand Taylor his first career defeat.
Taylor vs Lopez Betting Markets & Trends
If you’re looking to bet on more than the moneyline, BetOnline Sportsbook’s other Josh Taylor vs Teofimo Lopez markets might be appealing.
A popular market is the method of victory, which has Taylor favored to win by points at +165. Four of his last five victories have come by some form of decision. It’s also likely Taylor’s top option considering that Lopez has never been knocked out before.
As for Lopez, his top method of victory is also winning by points, albeit at +320 odds. There’s no surprise here, though, given that Taylor is undefeated, making it unlikely that we see him knocked out if he does finally lose.
Taking the above into account, it isn’t shocking, either, that BetOnline is favoring that this fight will go the distance at -138 odds.
Josh Taylor vs Teofimo Lopez Jr Prediction and Best Bets
Although he hasn't fought in over a year, I’m taking Taylor to retain his titles tonight. I just can’t see Lopez winning after doubting himself following his last fight. Yes, that was several months ago, but that’s not the mentality you want in a boxer going up against someone who’s undefeated. Taylor has a lot to prove after the controversy surrounding his previous fight, so look for him to try and silence the doubters.
Nevertheless, this fight could go either way, which is why I’m going with a neutral bet by taking the fight to go the distance at -138 odds. There’s some decent value here considering how neither man has been knocked out before. Furthermore, eight of their combined last 11 fights have reached the time limit.
As both boxers come off split-decision victories, I see this fight going the distance as well, regardless of who comes out on top.
