Followers of professional boxing have been spoiled for choice over the last few weekends, with Oleksandr Usyk beating Anthony Joshua and Saul Alvarez completing his trilogy with Gennady Golovkin by securing another points victory. It’s now the chance for heavyweight pair Joe Joyce and Joseph Parker to make headlines.
Englishman Joyce enjoys the home advantage with this bout fought at the Manchester Arena, England. But New Zealand’s Joseph Parker won’t be completely friendless in the arena when the bell sounds following his recent move to the United Kingdom. Each of Parker’s last three bouts has come on English soil, and he’s gathering a strong following.
This contest is scheduled for 12 rounds and will decide the next holder of the WBO interim title, a belt that is vacant at present. There’s everything to fight for here, with the champion thrust into the limelight where he will attract the attention of the big two, Usyk and Tyson Fury, while the loser will drop down the pecking order.

Juggernaut rolls on
Joe Joyce is an underrated heavyweight, but he is out to change all that. The Londoner has the boxing skills and ring IQ gained from a successful amateur career combined with the power and stamina of a 12-round professional fighter.
He has been quietly making his way through the heavyweight rankings over the last few years – slowed only by the pandemic – but knows time is running out if he is to gate-crash the party and challenge for the titles.
The 37-year-old is currently ranked at number five in the United Kingdom, behind Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora, and he holds a position in the top 10 on the planet. His opponent on Saturday sits higher on the global list, giving JJ an opportunity to climb the ladder and catch the attention of major promoters as well as the top fighters of the division.
He enters with a record detailing 14 wins from 14 bouts, with all but one of his outings ending in a stoppage win. The only man to take Joyce the distance as a professional was experienced fighter Bryant Jennings at the O2 Arena, London, back in the summer of 2019.
Impressive form for Joyce
Joyce isn’t the most active of heavyweights, fighting only a handful of times a year, but his results are impressive, winning each of the challenges laid down before him and doing it in style. In his last three outings, he has beaten Daniel Dubois, Carlos Takam and Christian Hammer, dealing with each of those three fighters inside the distance.
Dynamite Dubois was unbeaten when meeting Joyce and was seen as the next big thing in British heavyweight boxing, but that winning run was brought to a shuddering halt by JJ, who got rid of him before the end of the 10thround. Dubois was forced to take a knee following a sustained beating, resulting in a broken eye socket.
Takam has a fierce reputation as a durable opponent with the skills to cause an upset if he isn’t taken seriously, but he fell in the first half of the contest. We saw Joe last in July of this year when wiping out Hammer in round four, sending his opponent to the canvas once in round three and then three times before the stoppage.
Familiar surroundings for Parker
The heavyweight boxing scene in the United Kingdom is thriving at the moment, with Joyce ranked alongside AJ, Fury, Whyte and Chisora.
That’s something fight fans from across the globe have been paying attention to. After a few previous outings in the UK, Joseph Parker decided to relocate to England, bringing himself closer to the big fights and big paydays.
Born in New Zealand, Parker can now be found in Morecambe, Lancashire, where he has a great team around him. He has access to great coaching and sparring, works closely with the big UK promoters, such as Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing and is building up a decent fanbase on the island, with British boxing followers taking the Kiwi to their heart.
He arrives at the Manchester Arena – a venue he knows only too well – with a professional boxing record detailing 30 wins against two defeats, with 21 wins coming inside the distance. The only two losses on his card came back-to-back against Joshua – when losing the WBO world title – and then when beaten on points by Whyte in London. Let’s take a closer look at his most recent form.
Since losing to Whyte, we have seen Parker box six times and claim victory on each occasion. His last two wins came on British soil when beating Derek Chisora twice on points, nicking a controversial split decision over WAR before improving to win the rematch more convincingly.
The New Zealander always comes to fight, and he will believe he has the skills and power to defeat his less experienced opponent and move back into contention for a crack at the heavyweight titles.
However, Joyce is the favourite in this fight for good reason, and he will show it.
