David Benavidez vs Caleb Plant Boxing History
Unsurprisingly, being undefeated has led to Benavidez being the clear-cut favorite this weekend. The 26-year-old is available at an average of -330 odds across the four highlighted sportsbooks, carrying an implied winning probability of 76.7%.
It’s hard not to like Benavidez’s chances after capturing the WBC interim super middleweight title in his last outing. It didn’t take long for him to defeat David Lemieux for the then-vacant gold, knocking the Montreal, Quebec native out in the second round.
Finishing opponents has been Benavidez’s norm for quite some time now. “The Mexican Monster” has picked up 23 of his 26 career wins by KO/TKO, having knocked out each of the last three opponents he’s faced.
Las Vegas has also been a welcoming location for Benavidez. He’s already won four times in “Sin City,” which includes when he defeated Ronald Gavril to capture the vacant WBC super middleweight title back in September 2017.
Although he isn’t undefeated like Benavidez, it’s important to point out that Plant has only lost once in his boxing career. That lone defeat was devastating, though, as it saw him lose the IBF super middleweight title to Canelo Alvarez via TKO at MGM Grand Garden Arena two years ago.
Nevertheless, Plant showcased resilience with a strong bounce-back performance. The 30-year-old veteran knocked out former WBC super middleweight title Anthony Dirrell back in October, leaving time to tell if he can build off that victory.
Fighting in Vegas should also give Plant some extra motivation. After all, he relocated there in 2016 and recently told Vegas Magazine that winning at MGM Grand Garden Arena would “mean a lot.”
“I'm most excited about getting my hand raised at the end of the night and walking out of there with a victory right here in Las Vegas, where I live, my home. To be able to get my hand raised in such a big fight with a lot on the line, it's gonna mean a lot.” — Caleb Plant on fighting David Benavidez
The odds might not be in Plant’s favor, but he’s overcome them before. Defeating Benavidez won’t be an easy task, but you can never say never in the world of boxing.
Benavidez vs Plant Betting Markets & Trends
If you’re looking to bet on more than the moneyline, BetOnline Sportsbook’s other David Benavidez vs Caleb Plant marks might be appealing.
For example, Benavidez is favored to win by knockout at -130 odds. Again, all but three of his previous 26 victories have come by KO/TKO. Considering how Plant has been knocked out before, it’s not an impossibility.
On the flip side, Plant’s top victory method is winning by points at +390 odds. While he’s won by decision nine times throughout his career, only one of Plant’s last four victories has come by points.
Keeping that in mind, BetOnline favors that this boxing match won’t go the distance at -230.
If you’re seeking additional value, alternative round betting might be for you. Under this market, Benavidez is favored to win between Rounds 7 and 12 at +145 odds. This makes sense since Plant has solid cardio while his lone loss took place in the 11th round.
Benavidez vs Plant Prediction and Best Bets
Both super middleweights are talented, but I’m siding with Benavidez. He’s undefeated for a reason and has the ability to finish off any opponent he faces. While Plant has been picking up KO/TKO victories as well, I just don't see him out-hitting the champion.
As for the best bet, I’m going with Benavidez winning by KO/TKO at -130 on BetOnline. He’s a terrific finisher and knows that Plant is capable of being knocked out, as proven by his fight with Alvarez. It’ll be close at first, but I fully expect Benavidez to land some crucial blows in the later rounds before sending Plant to the mat.
